AI SEO usually means improving your visibility in AI-generated search answers; traditional SEO improves discovery and performance in search results. They share much of the same work. The practical additions are checking each platform’s access rules, verifying how it describes your business and measuring citations separately from visits and leads. Keep working SEO, then add a focused AI-search test where your customers actually research.

There is another meaning: using AI tools to do SEO work faster. That is a production method, not a guarantee of appearing in ChatGPT or Google AI answers. I would settle that distinction before comparing agency proposals or moving a budget.

Key takeaways
01
Separate the tool from the destination.

AI-assisted research and visibility in AI answers are different projects.

02
Keep the shared foundation.

A useful answer, accessible page and working customer route matter across search experiences.

03
Check the actual platform.

Google Search controls, ChatGPT search access and model-training choices are not interchangeable.

04
Keep the evidence behind the number.

A citation count needs its question set and denominator. It is not a lead count.

What do AI SEO, AEO and GEO mean?

In this article, AI SEO means work intended to improve discovery and accurate representation in AI search. AEO stands for answer engine optimization; GEO stands for generative engine optimization. The labels overlap in agency services and industry discussion. They are not a universal specification that makes every system select the same answer.

Three different things that can appear in one proposal
WorkWhat changesUseful acceptance check
Traditional SEOImprove useful search visibility, pages and customer journeys. Can the right visitor find the page and complete the task?
AI-assisted SEOUse tools for clustering, drafts, audits or reporting. Is the output accurate, useful and checked by an accountable person?
AI-search optimizationInvestigate source selection, business descriptions and relevant AI referrals. What platform and question were tested, what appeared, and what happened next?

One team can do all three. Ask a supplier to name the work rather than treating a new acronym as a separate technical requirement. A tool-generated brief still needs evidence. A cited answer still needs an accurate destination.

AI SEO vs traditional SEO: what actually changes?

The important difference is the surface where a reader encounters your information. A list of results offers pages to visit. A generated answer may explain part of the issue, compare options and link to selected sources. A person can still visit those sources. Both experiences can include research, local needs and buying decisions.

Compare the work without inventing a false split
AreaTraditional SEOAI-search addition
ResearchUnderstand queries, intent and useful destinations.Test realistic questions on a named platform; record context and sources.
ContentExplain the task with evidence, clear structure and current facts.Check whether sampled answers represent those facts accurately.
Technical accessCheck loading, discovery, indexing and intended search settings.Check platform-specific inclusion and crawler controls.
ReputationEarn useful references and make business claims verifiable.Inspect which external sources support or contradict the answer.

Clear answers and topical coverage were useful before AI search. Keywords still help describe demand; they do not replace reading the actual question. Equally, a brand mention on an unrelated page is not proof that a system will recommend your business.

Does AI SEO replace traditional SEO?

No. Google’s current AI optimization guide treats its generative search work as SEO and retains the same foundation. It does not require a special writing style, tiny content chunks or an llms.txt file for Google Search.

I would keep a service page that brings qualified enquiries while testing a missing comparison question elsewhere. Replacing it with short definitions to look “AI-ready” could remove the details a customer needs to hire you. An answer can be brief at the top and detailed where the decision requires it.

Define the deliverable before the budget

“Improve AI visibility” is incomplete. Name the platform, audience question, page, suspected gap, evidence to preserve and review method. Otherwise, a better-looking score can become the deliverable while the business problem stays unresolved.

Which task should come first?

CHOOSE THE NEXT TASK

What should you fix before spending more?

Choose the situation you can actually demonstrate. The next task changes with the evidence, not with the name on the agency package.

  1. 1
What you observedThe intended answer cannot be accessed or found reliably.
  2. 2
Next check and ownerDeveloper checks the final URL, content, indexing and platform access.
  3. 3
Smallest justified actionRepair the confirmed restriction, then repeat the same check.

Start with the technical failure. A new paragraph or an AI visibility subscription will not repair a blocked destination.

Illustrative decisions, not an audit of your website. Verify the source and access settings before making changes.
Read every situation and next step

The page is blocked or missing

The intended answer cannot be accessed or found reliably. Developer checks the final URL, content, indexing and platform access. Repair the confirmed restriction, then repeat the same check.

Start with the technical failure. A new paragraph or an AI visibility subscription will not repair a blocked destination.

The page works, but is not cited

An accurate, accessible page was absent from the answers you sampled. Check the platform, relevant question, selected sources and missing evidence. Improve a demonstrated gap and repeat the recorded question set.

Eligibility is not selection. Do not rewrite a working page solely because one answer omitted it.

An AI answer describes the offer incorrectly

A sampled answer states an outdated price, feature or service boundary. Follow its sources and compare them with the current offer and business records. Correct the source you control, request corrections elsewhere, then resample.

Protect accuracy first. Correcting your page does not guarantee that every model or cached answer will change immediately.

There are citations, but no qualified leads

The site appears as a source, but the business sees no useful enquiries. Verify the citation destination, reader intent, referral data and contact route. Fix the demonstrated route or offer gap; track real enquiries separately.

A citation is exposure, not a sale. Test what happens after the reader opens the source before buying more exposure.

Google and ChatGPT need different access checks

Start with the page you want people to reach. Confirm the final address opens, contains the answer and has the intended indexing and preview settings. Google’s AI-feature requirements include being indexed and eligible for a Search snippet. Meeting requirements does not guarantee selection.

For Google’s current inclusion control, open the correct Search Console property and review Settings > Search generative AI. Check whether the choice is inherited from a parent property. Google documents this separately from model-training controls. See the Search generative AI control. These instructions were checked against documentation on 14 October 2026; account labels can change. Review the setting before changing it.

Access decisions are specific to the product
Product or purposeCheckAvoid this assumption
Google AI searchSearch eligibility and the applicable Search generative AI inclusion setting.Allowing crawling alone guarantees an AI supporting link.
ChatGPT searchOAI-SearchBot access and infrastructure restrictions.Blocking or allowing a training bot decides search access.
OpenAI model trainingThe separate GPTBot choice.Allowing training buys a recommendation or citation.

OpenAI documents OAI-SearchBot for search and GPTBot for content that may be used in training. Their settings are independent. Use the crawler documentation with your developer, including infrastructure checks, rather than pasting a broad “allow every AI bot” rule. Search access is a prerequisite to investigate, not a ranking promise.

Improve the answer your customer needs

Imagine a service company with a website-redesign page. This is a hypothetical example, not a client result. A customer asks whether a redesign includes redirects and protection for existing enquiries. The page says “modern design and growth” but never defines the migration scope.

The useful edit is specific: explain who inventories old URLs, who approves destinations, what happens to form submissions during release and which checks block launch. Keep a short answer near the relevant heading and supporting detail beneath it. Add a genuine sample checklist if the team can maintain it. The value is the missing decision, not a particular answer length.

Then test the same question again. If the page is still absent from an answer, inspect the selected sources and record that result. Do not invent a causal story about the edit. Our service-page guide develops the offer, evidence and contact route that must remain useful after someone arrives.

Measure citations, visits and qualified leads separately

Keep three records. The answer record says whether the brand was mentioned correctly, whether there was a source link and which page it opened. The visit record captures identifiable referrals and landing pages. The business record confirms real enquiries and qualification. A third-party article can mention your brand while receiving the citation itself; that is not a direct link to your site.

For Google, check the current Generative AI performance report in Search Console. Its documented metric is impressions, with dimensions including pages, country and device. The report may be absent when there are insufficient impressions. Follow the report documentation; do not label its impression count “qualified traffic.” Keep broader search-performance and analytics reports alongside it.

For sampled AI answers, save exact questions, platform, mode, date, language, country and repeat schedule. Separate branded from non-branded questions. Keep the set stable for comparison. Record the source URL and whether it actually supports the answer. Repeated questions are related observations, not independent consumers or a representative market survey.

KEEP THE DENOMINATOR

How many checked answers cite your site?

These hypothetical counts show why a citation count needs a defined sample. Move the sliders; this is arithmetic, not a forecast of AI visibility.

6 of 20 answers = 30% of this sample. This is not a market share, ranking probability or lead rate.

Formula: answers with a correct citation ÷ collected answers × 100. Count each answer once, even if it has several links to you. A correct citation links to your site and supports an accurate claim. If the total falls below the citation count, the count is reduced to that total. No data is sent or stored.
How to make two samples comparable

Keep the question set and context

Record platform, mode, language, country, date, exact questions and repeat schedule. Keep branded and non-branded questions separate. A narrow set of repeated questions is a sample of those conditions, not an estimate of all searches.

Keep visits and leads in separate records

In the default example, 6 of 20 answers contain a correct citation: 30%. The calculation does not tell you how many people saw the answer, visited your site or became customers.

Recognized AI referrals in analytics are useful evidence, but they do not capture every discovery route. A later direct visit or branded search does not prove an earlier AI influence. If a referred visitor does arrive, check the next step: relevant page, accurate offer, successful form or connected call. Our guide to visits that do not become calls follows that operational gap.

How much should a small team invest?

Start with the consequence of the problem. An inaccessible booking page or misleading service scope takes priority over expanding a monitoring dashboard. If the foundation works and customers ask relevant comparison questions in AI tools, choose a small test you can actually review.

A useful first brief names one page group, a fixed question set, an owner, the evidence to improve and the review date. Record editing time and tool costs. This is a way to limit uncertainty, not a universal 30-day recovery plan or fixed SEO/GEO budget ratio.

01
Record the baseline.

SEO owner saves the page, relevant search data, exact questions and observed sources.

02
Verify the missing answer.

Editor checks the current offer with its business owner and prepares the smallest justified change.

03
Test the customer route.

Developer verifies the page, platform access and a labelled test enquiry through to receipt.

04
Review the complete result.

Analyst compares the same question set and page group, separating exposure, visits and qualified outcomes.

Ask an agency what it will change if citations rise but enquiries do not, and what it will preserve if a valuable page is already working. A credible answer needs a next investigation, not another promise of guaranteed AI rankings.

Does using AI to write content change the answer?

AI assistance is a workflow choice. It does not demonstrate accuracy or expertise. Google’s guidance on generative AI content allows useful assistance while warning against producing many pages without added value. Review factual claims and metadata before publication.

An AI-detector label is not an authorship record or an explanation of a ranking change. For this workflow, keep the underlying sources, check the current procedure, add the missing business detail and remove unsupported claims. Changing punctuation to satisfy a detector does not repair a weak answer.

Should every prompt become a separate page?

Give different customer tasks useful homes. Add related questions where they belong; do not publish near-identical pages for every rephrasing. A maintenance problem is a poor substitute for a content plan.

Is a mention without a link worthless?

It can be worth investigating as a business-description signal. Record its accuracy and context. It is still different from a visit, a direct citation to your site or evidence of a sale.

Do I need to rewrite answers every month?

Review when facts, offers, questions or observed performance change. Check technical controls against current documentation. A calendar reminder can prompt a review without forcing cosmetic edits.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between AI SEO, AEO and GEO?

+

AI SEO can mean AI-assisted work or optimization for AI search. AEO means answer engine optimization; GEO means generative engine optimization. Their usage overlaps. Ask which platform, task and measurable deliverable the service covers.

Can a site appear in AI answers without buying an AI SEO tool?

+

Yes, a paid tool is not a universal eligibility requirement. Tools can help collect and review evidence. They do not replace an accessible, useful page or guarantee that a platform will select it.

Does FAQ schema guarantee AI citations?

+

No. Visible FAQs should answer real questions, and markup should reflect the visible content. There is no special Google AI schema that guarantees a source link.

What is a sensible first AI SEO measurement?

+

Record a relevant question set and the answers actually observed. Separate correct brand mentions, direct source citations, identifiable referrals and qualified enquiries. Report the sample denominator and the conditions of the test.

For a focused SEO and AI-search review, bring the pages that matter, the questions customers ask and a verified contact route. The deliverable should explain what to keep, what to fix and how to check the result.
